overview Professor Emeritus; previously ... Walter L. Palmer Distinguished Service Professor of Medicine, Pediatrics, and Family Medicine Assoc Dean for Clinical Science Research / Translational Medicine Director, Institute for Translational Medicine I have recently become Professor Emeritus (Sept 2024) at the University of Chicago, after nearly 40 years on the faculty and having served as the Walter L. Palmer Distinguished Service Professor of Medicine, Pediatrics, and Family Medicine; Associate Dean for Clinical Science Research, Translational Medicine; and founding Director of the Institute for Translational Medicine, home of the UChicago-Rush NIH/NCATS CTSA award. I served the CTSA Consortium as a co-Chair, Steering Committee member, and co-Chair of the Strategic Goal 3 and of the Collaboration/Engagement Domain Task Force. My research programs primarily addressed asthma. I have extensive experience studying airway smooth muscle (ASM) function and dysfunction in asthma, having studied smooth muscle specific gene transcription, protein accumulation, and hypertrophy, and signaling mechanisms that regulate these; ASM contraction and its reversal, and the mechanisms that regulate these; and ASM mediated-airway narrowing, airway constrictor responsiveness, and lung function in both animal models and humans. Additional studies addressed asthma genetics and treatment through mechanistic and therapeutic clinical studies and through preclinical studies of potential novel asthma treatments (remodilins and smooth muscle myosin-targeting PROTACs). Using data science approaches, I have identified subgroups of asthmatics that likely reflect different asthma endotypes, and I have explored the roles of Vitamin D and several medicines in protecting against COVID-19 infection or in worsening COVID-19 outcomes. I now lead efforts in an NSF Quantum Center to identify opportunities to translate quantum science for biomedical community. I directed or co-directed UChicago's NHLBI-sponsored T32 Research Training Program in Respiratory Biology for 24 years, led or co-led two NHLBI Multidisciplinary K12 Training Programs, co-led an NIH Broadening Experiences in Scientific Training (BEST) award, and led a Burroughs Wellcome Fund Physician Scientist Institutional Award. My ORCID is 0000-0002-0898-8530. My Scopus ID is 7006796752. My NIH COMMONS name is jsolway.
