overview Wendy Darlington, MD, MAPP is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, at the University of Chicago and a member of the Chicago Sickle Cell Disease Research Group. Dr. Darlington is a pediatric hematologist/oncologist whose primary research focuses on examining the health outcomes among patients with sickle cell disease. Clinically she is the director of the pediatric neuro-oncology program at the University of Chicago. She is also interested in caring for both benign and malignant hematologic disorders of childhood. Dr. Darlington graduated from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston with her MD in 2009. She completed her pediatrics residency at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center/Children’s Medical Center Dallas and her pediatric hematology/oncology fellowship at the University of Chicago. In 2014, while a fellow at the University of Chicago, she received a Master of Arts in Public Policy at the Harris School of Public Policy. Using sickle cell disease as a model for chronic childhood illness her current research focuses on understanding the complex interaction between health outcomes and socioeconomic indicators. She is currently looking at how public policies intended to increase access and appropriate healthcare utilization are changing patient outcomes.
