overview Neil Sengupta, MD, is a general gastroenterologist and Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Chicago. He sees patients with a wide range of digestive symptoms and diseases, including gastroesophageal reflux disease, peptic ulcer disease, gastrointestinal bleeding, and diverticular diseases. Dr. Sengupta is a national expert in the management of gastrointestinal bleeding. He is the primary author for national clinical guidelines on the management of lower gastrointestinal bleeding, and has specific interests in the management of gastrointestinal bleeding while on antithrombotic medications and optimal diagnostic testing for hospitalized patients with gastrointestinal bleeding. In addition, he serves as the GI section quality improvement director, and has active projects focused on improving the quality of colorectal cancer screening. Examples of initiatives undertaken have included the implementation of digital navigation for patients scheduled for colonoscopy, evaluating the use of computer-aided polyp detection, recruitment of patients into national clinical trials evaluating performance of blood based colorectal cancer screening tests, and video-based assessment of colonoscopy and polypectomy competency. Dr. Sengupta also is a dedicated educator, teaching medical students, residents and fellows about gastrointestinal pathophysiology, performance of endoscopy, and clinical gastroenterology.
