Dr. Omar K. Jamil is a gastroenterologist with clinical interests in nutrition, small bowel disorders, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). His work emphasizes the integration of diet- and nutrition-based therapy into IBD care and the systematic assessment and optimization of medically complex patients preparing for major abdominal surgery.
Dr. Jamil completed a combined Internal Medicine–Pediatrics residency and subsequently trained in Adult Gastroenterology at the University of Chicago, serving as both Chief Resident and Chief Fellow. His fellowship research included a clinical trial evaluating a proprietary MRI-based technology for quantifying sarcopenia. His ongoing academic interests include malnutrition assessment, sarcopenia, and the development of structured perioperative nutritional optimization pathways for patients with IBD and other complex gastrointestinal diseases.
As Associate Medical Director of Clinical Nutrition, Dr. Jamil works across multidisciplinary teams to advance evidence-based nutrition care, with particular focus on enteral and parenteral nutrition, perioperative nutrition strategy, and malnutrition screening and protocol development.
Dr. Jamil sees patients at UChicago Medicine’s Hyde Park campus and at the Hinsdale location, providing comprehensive care in general gastroenterology, IBD, and clinical nutrition.
